Meet the Tumwater Middle School Health and Fitness program.

Mr. Stoney
Hello! I am Joshua Stoney and I am the full time male Health and Fitness teacher. This is my fifth year of teaching with one year at Centralia Middle School and this being my fourth year at Tumwater Middle School. I am orginally from Elma, Washington and graduated from Eastern Washington University with a B.A.E Health and Fitness Education while finishing up my Masters in Educational Administration as well as gaining my certified strength and conditioning specialist license through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
I am excited to be part of a program that with goals to teach our students the skills and knowlege important to maintain a long healthy and active life. We hope by incorporating team sports with life time leisure activites as well as fitness and health concepts that every student will leave with the knowledge to be healthy and active.
I enjoy all types of active leisures like camping, sports, hiking, coaching and basically anything outdoors with my wife and two kids Luke and Lane. I hope to meet you all at one point or time and discuss any question you have about Health and Fitness.

Mrs. Hyer-Long

Howdy! My name is Jennifer Hyer-Long and this is my 15th year at Tumwater Middle School.  I have taught Health and Fitness, Science, and have done work as an Academic Support teacher.  I feel fortunate to be teaching in Tumwater as this is where I spent most of my years of education!  I attended Michael T. Simmons (in the cool old building!) from 4-6th grades, Tumwater Middle School (yes, in the old buildings!) for 7-8th grades and spent 4 years at Tumwater High School (Go T-Birds! NGUNNGU!).  I earned my AA at South Puget Sound Community College, my Bachelors degree at Central Washington University and my Master’s degree through Lesley University.  I love school!

When I’m not at school I hang out with my family.  My husband Patrick and my two sons, Logan (8) and Chase (4) and I love to go camping and hiking.  The boys sleep better in a tent than they do at home.  If you can’t find us in the summer look to the mountains!  I coach both boy's soccer teams and help with his baseball team.  We also hang out in Cannon Beach, OR and fly kites in the summer.  I scrapbook, (mostly pictures of the kids!), garden and read constantly…  My book club considers me a “book geek” and I’m proud of it!

I love my job.  I get excited every day about teaching kids to respect their bodies and stay healthy for a lifetime!

Q: What do you teach?

A: Health and Fitness at TMS

Q: How long have you been teaching for?

A: This is year 13 at TMS… I actually taught Ropes course stuff for the Boy Scouts for several summers…(not very many people know that!)

Q: What is your favorite quote?

A: Life is Good! Or When life throws you a curve, hit it out of the park!

Q: Do you do anything else other than teach?

A: Where shall I begin!  I coach girl’s soccer here at TMS and can be found wrapping presents at the family business, The Alpine Experience, during the holidays!

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: Anything with gravy (my Mom makes the best!) or BBQ sauce (my husband makes ours! Yum!) and you just can’t go wrong with a platter of fresh fruit!

Q: What is your favorite part of teaching?

A: Hmmm… there are so many things! For now… when I overhear kids talking about how much they enjoyed something we taught!
